According to the US Fire Administration over 40% of fatalities in a structure fire happen in a home without a working smoke detector. Here are some tips and guidelines for smoke detectors in your home.

 

Place a smoke alarm on each floor of your home and inside every bedroom.

Check smoke alarms every month by pushing the test button.

Change the batteries in your alarms twice a year. A great time to do this is during daylight savings time, when you "spring forward" and "fall back."

Smoke alarms wear out over time, replace yours every 8-10 years.

Keep smoke alarms clean. Dust and debris can interfere with their operation. Vacuum over and around your smoke alarm regularly.
