Winter holidays are a time for families and friends to get together. But there is also a greater risk for fire in your home. By following a few simple tips you can ensure a happy and fire-safe holiday season. Also remeber when you deck the halls this holiday season, be fire smart! A small fire that spreads to a Christmas tree can grow large very quickly.

Holiday facts from NFPA

  1. December is the peak time of year for home candle fires.

  2. Roughly two out of five home fires start in the kitchen.

  3. Unattended cooking is the leading cause of home fires.

  4. Each year, fire departments respond to roughly 200 structure fires caused by Christmas trees.

  5. Two out of five home Christmas tree fires are caused by electrical problems.

  6. A heat source too close to the tree causes one- quarter of the fires.
